In January 2008, local residents Keith Byrd and Doug Starcke purchased the shop and brought on local resident John Batten as the General Manager. All this in an effort to preserve the local surf shop footprint.
Doug and John grew up in Emerald Isle, and have been surfing the local breaks for more than 30 years combined. After both attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, its an honor to be back home rebuilding the shop, a shop they've had fond memories of ever since they were grubby groms.
Keith and Syndie Byrd also played an active role in the surf community. Over the years the Byrd family supported their two sons, Brian and Tyler as they actively competed in local and regional surf contests from groms to teenagers.

After a long days work remodeling the shop, Doug's fiance, Chelsea Donovan, came up with the name South Swell Surf Shop. The foundation for our name is that of Bogue Banks, the barrier island for which the shop sits. The island faces south and our primary swell window is from the south.
Two and a half months of blood, sweat and tears, went into remodeling South Swell. We opened our doors in March of 2008. Our goal is to provide the newest surf and skate selection, cleanest facility, and unmatched customer service.
